The AIS Innovators’ Scholarship Programme, an initiative under the AIS Research and Development Centre of the Archipelagic and Island State Forum (AIS Forum) has recently concluded. This milestone marked the culmination of an inspiring journey for young scholars from archipelagic and island nations, each driven by a shared passion for ocean sustainability at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, IPB University Indonesia.
Bringing together seven awardees from Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Fiji, Comoros, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands, the programme fostered a vibrant and diverse learning environment. The programme was thoughtfully designed to support students engaged in ocean-related research and innovation, ranging from marine science and biodiversity to sustainable coastal management. More than just a scholarship, it offered a holistic platform that combined academic mentorship, technical guidance, and cross-cultural exchange, enabling participants to refine their ideas and translate them into meaningful contributions for their communities.
A Unique Gathering of Island Voices
Through collaborative learning, shared experiences, and exposure to global networks, the scholars not only advanced their academic pursuits but also built lasting connections rooted in a common vision: to become agents of change for the future of our oceans.
“This scholarship wasn’t just about funding. It was about opening doors, encouraging new ways of thinking, and connecting young islanders to something bigger than themselves,” said Emily Bernard, Innovators’ Scholarship awardee from Fiji. “I’ve grown so much during this time, both as a student and as someone who cares deeply about the future of our oceans.”
This diversity wasn’t incidental, it was intentional. The programme was designed to reflect the richness of island cultures and the common challenges they face, from rising sea levels to dwindling marine resources. With a gender-balanced cohort of four men and three women, the initiative also underscored its commitment to inclusivity and gender equity in science, innovation, and leadership.
Throughout the programme, the awardees were not only guided by mentors and experts from IPB University but also had the rare opportunity to learn from the Islands & Small States Institute (ISSI) University of Malta. This international collaboration opened new horizons, connecting local knowledge with global insights, and helping the scholars deepen their research, sharpen their ideas, and grow the confidence to become changemakers in their own island communities.
“Through this programme, we’re not just supporting students, we’re investing in the next generation of ocean innovators. These young minds will help shape how we care for our oceans in the years to come.” said Dr. Aretha Aprilia, Head of UNDP Indonesia’s Nature, Climate, and Energy Unit.
Developed in close collaboration with key academic and government partners, particularly IPB University, this programme was designed with a good academic foundation to provide knowledge and develop ideas for tangible innovative solutions. These partnerships ensured that the programme was grounded in rigorous academic standards while remaining responsive to the real-world needs of island communities.
“These young people are showing us what the future can look like. With the right support, they’re turning their knowledge and ideas into real-world solutions that can help island nations thrive.” said Prof. Dr. Arif Satria, Rector of IPB University.
A Reflection of the AIS Forum’s Vision
Although the formal programme has ended, its impact is just beginning. Many of the scholars are now continuing their research, preparing academic publications, or launching pilot projects in their home countries. More importantly, they are returning with new skills, stronger networks, and a renewed sense of purpose. Since its inception, the scholarship is set to be a tangible expression of the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum’s broader mission: to foster cooperation among island nations, promote inclusive development, and harness innovation to address shared challenges.
“It’s a clear example of how we can work together across borders to tackle shared challenges. It shows the strength of the AIS Forum, UNDP Indonesia, and all related stakeholders in connecting people, knowledge, and ideas for a better, more sustainable future.” said H.E. Arif Havas Oegroseno, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
As these young scholars return home, they carry with them not just research findings, but a shared belief: that island nations, united by the ocean, can lead the way toward a more sustainable and resilient future. The connections they’ve built and the knowledge they’ve gained will continue to ripple outward, strengthening the global movement to protect our oceans.
