The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) of IPB University is the only higher education institution from Southeast Asia/ASEAN that has won the Highly Competitive Grant EU-ASEAN SCOPE Higher Education Connectivity theme Blue Economy.
A total of 120 proposals from various leading universities in Europe and Southeast Asia competed in this SCOPE program. The program, run by Nuffic (Netherlands) and DAAD (Germany), offers three themes, namely Green Transition, Digital Transformation, and Blue Economy. A total of 17 higher education institutions from the EU and ASEAN are involved in these three themes.
“Blue economy itself is one of the leading competencies at FPIK IPB University. Seeing the suitability of the theme offered, we formed a drafting team consisting of young gen Z lecturers, Firsta Kusuma Yudha, MSi; Dr Intan; and Dr Irfan to prepare the concept of ideas,” said Prof Hefni Effendi as project leader.
Prof Hefni continued, during the preparation of the proposal, the team also involved Dr Sebastian Ferse, a long term DAAD lecture who served at FPIK IPB University. Dr Ferse provided constructive input from the perspective of German scientists’ strategies in making a complete and comprehensive proposal so that it could meet the guidelines and satisfy the reviewers.
“We also invited potential partners from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). From the EU, three institutions were invited to work together, namely Groningen University (Netherlands), Oldenburg University (Germany), and Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research / ZMT Bremen (Germany), “said Prof Hefni who is also the Chairman of the Department of Aquatic Resources Management of IPB University.
In full, FPIK IPB University became the winner for the Blue Economy theme. The Green Transition theme was won by a university in Germany. The Digital Transformation theme was won by a university in Spain. These three universities became cluster leads.
Recently, FPIK IPB University also sent a team consisting of Prof Hefni Effendi, Prof Mala Nurilmala, and Firsta Kusuma Yudha, MSi, to participate in a series of workshops and discussions with university representatives from the EU and ASEAN.
Located at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Jakarta, Prof Hefni presented the STABLE Project (Sustainable Blue Economy) proposal. This project is a form of higher education partnership designed to strengthen collaboration between countries in building a sustainable, inclusive and science-based blue economy.
On that occasion, IPB University’s Vice Rector for Global Connectivity, Collaboration, and Alumni Relations, Prof Iskandar Z Siregar signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to mark the university’s joint commitment to building collaborative networks and strengthening academic collaboration across countries.
