The curriculum was structured in a directed but dynamic manner so that the learning outcomes are able to answer water resource management problems. Therefore, the process of preparing, implementing, evaluating, and updating the curriculum is optimally pursued by involving stakeholders (stakeholder participation).

The Chancellor of IPB directly gave directions regarding the urgency and relevance of developing the IPB 4.0 curriculum. The K2020 curriculum will be implemented in the 2020/2021 academic year, namely in August 2020. The implementation of this new curriculum is based on Decree of the Chancellor of IPB No. 54/IT3/PP/2020 concerning the formation of a K2020 implementation team to oversee the implementation of K2020 which is accompanied by the issuance of a Standard Operational Procedure (SOP). This implementation team is in charge of compiling the curriculum until it is implemented in the 2020/2021 Academic Year.

The K2020 curriculum is IPB’s effort to align the educational process with the dynamics of change and the demands of the times. Learning reorientation emphasizes personalized learning and learning flexibility through: (1) Updating delivery techniques and methods, (2) Reorienting the assessment system from the scoring output system to being improved into an assessment of the process of learning outcomes (Learning Outcomes), (3) Updating courses content by integrating new literacy, (4) Science and Technology for Tomorrow People, and (6) Developing broad resonant courses, capitalizing on advances in digital technology and utilizing open source learning resources. This learning reorientation is complemented by One Semester Learning Plan document ‘Rencana Pembelajaran Satu Semester’ (RPSS).
