Competition Description

Blue Carbon science is part of the latest science related to sustainable management of aquatic (fresh and marine) resources and environments as well as sustainable fisheries management, which is one of the main competencies of the Department of Aquatic Resources Management (MSP), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University. So far there are no known higher education institutions that focus on blue carbon and blue economy learning in Indonesia.

The demand for aquatic ecosystem services results in an increase in carbon emissions, which has an impact on climate change, which requires adaptation and mitigation efforts. Science related to carbon source mechanisms, carbon emissions, and carbon sequestration (the process of binding and storing CO2 from the atmosphere), and carbon stocks, to blue carbon-based economic policies (blue economy policies) still shows gaps. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen and integrate science in the field of blue carbon.

Methods for calculating carbon footprints in terrestrial ecosystems have been well developed and there are carbon footprint calculators that are widely applied in estimating the carbon footprint of a business or industrial activity. Carbon trading in terrestrial ecosystems has also been implemented as carbon compensation in a balancing mechanism between carbon sources and carbon sinks.

Thus, the creativity of researchers, practitioners and students is needed to develop blue carbon estimation formulations. This can be realized in the form of a competition for students in the form of creating a calculator for calculating blue carbon in key coastal ecosystems, namely mangroves.
